Barrel firing is a firing process that closely simulates pit firing--an ancient way of firing--in a more controlled manner. Ceramic objects are colored not by glaze but by the natural patterns of smoke and minerals in the firing itself and the surface of the clay.
In this workshop we will explore the techniques available to get the best out of a barrel or pit firing, focusing on pottery both on and off the wheel and approaches to polishing, or burnishing, the ware, and preparing the barrel for the firing. The week will culminate with an exciting barrel firing. No previous experience necessary.
